What’s This on My Shelf? Oh, The Chronicles of Narnia!

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Okay, only lions. And, really, only one lion. And he is a good guy.

Day 3 of the A to Z Challenge (For a list of all topics click here!) is about The Chronicles of Narnia. Most would use N for this topic but that letter is already taken!

My introduction to The Chronicles of Narnia was some time in elementary school. I think it was grade one or two. The teacher read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe aloud to the class. I loved the story, but I did not realize that it was part of a series. The funny thing is, I owned the series! I have no idea when, but at some point, my aunt gave me a box set of all seven books. They sat on my bookshelf for years untouched, until one fateful week.

Our school did something called “TV-Free Week” one year for charity, and during that week I ended up sick with the flu. So there I was, bed-ridden and unable to turn the TV on. So I checked my bookshelf and there was the series that I had ignored for all this time and that is when I realized that the second book was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I had read that!

So I grabbed down The Magician’s Nephew and got to reading. I read the whole series that week (which was amazing for me at the time) and I loved it. Although, I was a bit confused after reading it as to why the second book in the series was required reading in school and not the first (I later discovered that The Magician’s Nephew was more of a prequel).

Now, I am 27 and I cannot count the amount of times I have reread the series. I even read it aloud to my husband recently because he had only read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! (Although, we didn’t finish the whole series… He still needs to read The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. Bug him on Twitter to finish it!)

I think that the whole series should be required reading for elementary students. And since it isn’t, I think that parents should get their children to read it, because it is awesome. I know that I will be reading the series in the future many times. And in that future, I will be reading them aloud to my own future children.

Which is your favourite book in the series? Mine is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader!
