A is for Anne Rice – The Reason I Love Vampires

Today’s blog post is brought to you by the letter “A”… Wait, am I allowed to say that, or is that some sort of breach of copyright? Shhhhhh…

Anne Rice

My first post for the A to Z Challenge (For a list of all the posts and info about my theme click here!) is about one of my favourite authors, Anne Rice.

My love for Anne Rice’s wonderful novels actually started before I even had read one of them. I saw the movie “The Queen of the Damned” and fell in love with the world of Vampires that she had created. I did not know at the time, that her story differed greatly from the storyline of the movie, but that did not matter to me and it still doesn’t. Maybe if I had read the books first, I would not have been so impressed by the movie. Therefore, I’m glad I saw the movie first!

I started reading the Vampire Chronicles not long after seeing the movie for the first time. It amazed me. The Vampires had such history and the details made the world and characters come alive. I fell in love with each vampire, each for different reasons. I could never truly decide who was my favourite. Even now I will say “Armand for sure, oh but Lestat… Hmm, but I really like Marius… Oh bother…” and that continues until I have listed each and every one of them.

In high school, which is when I first read the books, I started wearing my makeup like the vampires in the Queen of the Damned movie. I would put dark and light brown all around my eyes and a bit of a silvery purple on the inside corner. Sometimes I would put a bit of red around my eyes, to really get the vampire look. I was always a vampire every Hallowe’en.

In grade twelve, I finally picked up the first of the Mayfair Witches books, The Witching Hour. I love love loved them. And then when the Vampire Chronicles tied in with the Witches, I was in heaven.

Last Hallowe’en, Anne Rice released another installment into the Vampire Chronicles, Price Lestat. I haven’t read it yet! I know, what’s wrong with me? I got it for Christmas and it is still sitting on my book shelf unopened. I think it’s for the same reason I took so long to read the final book in the Wheel of Time. I don’t want it to be over.

I know that Anne Rice might, and probably will, write another book with the Brat Prince (Lestat), but I still don’t want to read it yet, because I will never be able to read it for the first time ever again. I know, it’s silly.

I will get to it eventually, and when I do, I will love it. I know I will.

If you have not yet read an Anne Rice novel, please, ooooh please, pick up Interview with the Vampire ASAP! You will not regret it!
