How I Get My Butt Out of My Chair While Writing

Yoga Pose

Writing involves a lot of sitting. I really mean a lot. And, so I’ve heard, sitting for long periods of time is not so good on the body. Because of this sad news, I have come up with quite a few little exercises for when I’ve had my butt in the chair for too long. And, since I really like to multitask (sometimes to my own detriment), many of the exercises I do are things I can do while doing other things. In other words, multitasking. Yes, multitasking. Did I say multitasking yet? I think I may have…

Anyway, here are a few of the things I do to get my butt out of my chair and my blood flowing:

  • The thing that I do that takes the least amount of effort and gets the job done is super simple. Really. I just stand up and stretch! Wow, groundbreaking. Seriously.
  • Another thing I do, which gets my butt out of my chair but still involves my chair, are chair dips. Another really easy exercise and I can even continue to look at my screen while doing them. Exciting.
  • I keep a small 5 pound weight next to my desk. It may not get my butt out of my chair, but it does get the blood flowing. And I suppose it also keeps my arms toned. Oh, and it is also something I can do while keeping my eyes on the screen. Wow, I really should give my eyes a break…
  • Another thing, which doesn’t disrupt the current position of my body, is a wall sit. I usually just get up and head to the wall and do a quick 30 second wall sit, but sometimes I switch it up and do 45 seconds or even a full minute. This is also when I give my eyes their much needed break.
  • Along the same lines as the first bullet point, I also stand up and walk around once in a while. I usually do this while I am thinking about what I am going to write next. Or when I am hungry, thirsty, need to pee, etc…
  • And lastly, when I really need a good break from sitting, I head on over to my recumbent exercise bike with a good book or my ereader and get my legs a-moving. Oh wait. Recumbent… Bike… Riiiiiight, that is still sitting. Oh well!

Well, that’s my list!

What do you do to get your butt out of your chair, whether you’re writing or otherwise?

Happy New Year!!!

Ratties2013 came and went so fast. It flew right on by. It had it’s ups and downs. I’m sad it’s over but happy for a new beginning. Yes, generic. This whole blog post is going to be rather generic.

There were many good times in 2013… Deciding to take a chance and quit my job to write full time, realizing I was sick of school, finishing the semester with no idea when I will continue my degree, completing NaNoWriMo for the first time ever, my husband getting a new awesome job, adding a couple new ratties to our family, seeing concerts, having great times with friends and family, and more!

But 2013 also had it’s bad times… The multiple times when my husband and I could barely afford to eat, all the vet bills, our poor ratties being sick, when our beautiful pet rat Sansa died, when my dad’s heart stopped beating while him and my mom were on vacation and he had to get a heart monitor put in, and, well, much more.

But, as sad as the bad things were, I think that the good times made up for them. 2013 was a good year overall and I look forward to a good year ahead.

So, happy New Year everyone! I wish you all a great 2014!

Back to School

School BooksWell, I will fully admit that I have not been writing much the past few weeks. I know, I know. What the heck happened? Well, lots of things, but I won’t get into all of that. What I will say, is that I am still very much in love with my novel and I will continue to work toward it’s completion! Although, that will be a slow process since I will be back to school in just over a week.

Back to school. Guh. Scary thought. I skipped the last semester, so instead of it only being four months since I was last in classes, it has been eight whole months! But I am feeling confident about my classes and I have already started the mass amount of text book reading.

All. Will. Be. Well.

Truly. (I’m still trying to convince myself…)

Anyway, the courses that I am taking are Human Geography, Anthropology of Food, World History: 1900 – 1945, and Creative Writing Fiction 2. I am most excited for the creative writing course and it is online only so that is even better. I am least excited for the history course. I took an introductory history class in my first semester and I didn’t like it so much… Oh well, we shall see.

I will try to get some writing done on my novel throughout the semester but I am not expecting all that much progress. As may have been guessed, I will not be participating in NaNoWriMo this November because I will have much too much to do. Also, NaNo in November is more of a start-with-a-blank-page-and-go-0-words-to-50,000-with-nothing-but-coffee, and since I am already mid-novel, it really would not work for me at the moment. And it would kind of be cheating, wouldn’t it? Also, I don’t drink coffee. Is that cheating right there? Have I been cheating all this time? Oh, dear…

And anyways… Is anybody else heading back to school? If so, what are you taking? Leave a comment below 🙂
